Introduction to Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) and Assistive Technology (AT)  This presentation is intended for individuals who   have little to no experience in the areas of AAC and AT.  Basic terminology and principles will be defined and explored including: who can benefit from AAC/AT; overview of symbol types; and common, low- and high-tech AAC/AT devices and systems.  Participants will have the opportunity to interact with all systems and equipment discussed.

Designing Communication Opportunities for Children with Severe Impairments  This training provides information on how to create stimulating activities to facilitate communication in children with severe communication impairments.  Discussion of both low-tech and high-tech augmentative communication strategies will be the focus.  Your team will have the opportunity to examine state-of-the-art technology and learn how to design opportunities for your child/student to become a more active participant. 

Integrating Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) Into Natural Environments  This training provides information on how to facilitate positive communication and social participation in individuals learning and using AAC.  Visual and tangible strategies including activity boards, schedule displays and picture systems to enhance receptive and expressive language will be shown.  Instructors will explain the methods to design and implement these tools.  Adapted stories and games are also demonstrated and explained as a strategy for language-learning activities and recreation.  Hi-tech tools (speech generating devices) will be discussed including the integration of these systems into natural environments. 

Rett Syndrome:  Medical and Social Implications for Planning Educational Opportunities  This training provides critical information to educators about children diagnosed with Rett Syndrome.  Included in the curriculum is a thorough discussion of the medical implications of this genetic syndrome.  In addition, up-to-date information will be shared that will dispel the myths that are often associated with this disorder.  In depth discussion of how to create communication and educational opportunities for learning and social participation will be included.
